And with it, the Korean-Canadian bass artist invited friends and collaborators to reimagine her 2024 album, When a Thought Grows Wings. Now available for pre-order, the first disc features the original version of the album, while the second disc includes the reimagined version. A little two for one. Very nice. Check out the backstage interview we did with Luna Lee last year at the Ballad Bar. When did you start writing your own music?

I started writing my own music when I picked up the guitar. So when I was 12 or 13, I started learning how to cover songs. I think the first song I ever covered was The Only Exception by Paramour. And then from there I started writing, yeah, my own little weird songs in my bedroom. I was like really into Green Day at the time as well. Definitely influenced by them and like was weird writing these weird little like pop punk type songs in my bedroom.

In other news, tonight the Linda Lindas play Walter Studios. The teenage rockers grew up literally surrounded by rock music. And with no obligation, the Linda Lindas bring literate references and weird Al Yankovic to the table.

Well, you all have played some with some really fascinatingly diverse bands, you know, from the Rolling Stones to like Paramour, which is a pretty big spectrum right there, I think. Uh but I was really curious. At one point, you were all on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, right?

Them and Rancid and Green Day.

What did you all think watching them do their set? And did you have any interactions with any members of the Smashing Pumpkins that were interesting?

Their set was the most like epic thing. They had this huge light rig, you know, and it was like super uh I don't know, it was it was a it was cool, it was a big show. And um Kiki and Katie from the Smashing Pumpkins, they they would like hang out with us sometime. And oh, and James Iha during at catering, he would like talk to us a lot, and he's like really funny. He told us that his favorite, well, because I like to ask what favorite dinosaurs are. Did I did I ask it at their VIP thing? Yeah, they had they had like a bucket where you could drop questions in it, and I asked them, what is your favorite dinosaur? And James was like, Oh, my favorite dinosaur is the Demetrodon, and he goes, because you know, I don't I I guess he connected with it at an early age. He saw it in a book, and he loves how how it's just like and he like made that face. He goes, Yeah, I love the Demetrodon, but he's just like chill.

He's like we're like, What? He's so monotone and like straight face, yeah, yeah.

He like says everything so like unexcitedly, but he's like, Yeah, he's he's just super funny.

And then a funny connection is that since we're kind of named after the song Linda Linda by the Blue Hearts and also the movie Linda Linda Linda, um, which are both like Japanese things. Um, and so James Ehaw actually scored the movie Linda Linda Linda that we kind of are partially named after, which is kind of funny.

How about Rancid? Did you all probably grow up hearing Rancid like relatively early in your lives? Was that the case?

Rancid Rancid was so fun. It was so fun because we had a 20-minute set right right before Rancid. So it was so fun because we would just play 20 minutes and then I'd like leave the stage and I'd I had cat whiskers that or I'd painted on cat whiskers every show that tour. So I'd like you know take off my cat whiskers and go straight into the straight into the um audience for rancid and try to start a pit. And I guess they saw that, right? Because um one of the shows one of the shows Lars dedicated a song to us. He was like, because every day I see the Linda Lindas out there, you know, and I don't know, this feels weird to say, but he was like, Yeah, you know, if you can't he he was just talking about how we were always um out in the crowd, and he goes, if you can't handle your shit, get out of the pit. And I was like, Oh my god, he dedicated that song to us. I don't know, that just made me so happy. But they were but they're all super nice, and like Lars showed Bella how to do some like stretches for her back, and uh Tim was super sweet, and I don't know, they were just all like super nice, and it's so funny like watching uh Matt Freeman's bass bunker, and sometimes we'd see we saw him like filming a few of them, and then I saw them up on YouTube, and I was like, oh my god, I was nobody filmed that.

Were Operation Ivy a band that any of you connected with?
SPEAKER_07
Yes, Operation Ivy was so good. Yesterday, um, because we we have a playlist that like plays uh while people are walking in or like in between sets and stuff, and um, let me think last Wave Rockers um hold on Common Rider played, and I was like, Oh, I love this song, and then I was like, Oh well, I put it on the playlist.

But do you all update that playlist together?

Well, we kind of forgot to update the playlist from last tour, but we did make that playlist together. Maybe we'll add in some songs this tour.

Listening to it, like when we hear it, there's like a lot of Taylor Swift on it that I didn't realize, and I think that's my fault. I don't mind, but it was just kind of funny.

Yeah, and Green Day is just out here really doing they're doing a ton of activity. It's really interesting and cool to see as well. A band that uh I I mean, I suppose that it's like I it when I consider the fact that they were sort of my introduction to punk rock in a lot of ways, as a as a person who's you know your your age and younger. I have to imagine that that's probably carried through to like generations way. Like, there's so many people for whom Green Day's their first punk band.

Uh dude, the Green Day tour was so fun. Like, I had so much fun on that tour. Going into it, I was like, man, it's gonna feel weird because we're playing like baseball stadium and stuff, but the vibes were not off, and everyone was super nice, and yeah, it was just it was just so much fun, like being able to see Green Day like every other day, you know? Like they put on such a good show, and I yeah, I I'm just really happy about that experience. Their spirit, you know, is just like has has been um I don't know, they're just they're just like so into it, you know? And I mean they played like two and a half hours like every night, you know? And I mean that stage is so big, like just running around it for 20 minutes is like exhausting for me. But they're at it for two and a half hours, 110% the whole time with like pyrotechnics that are like you can feel them from the crowd. Like, I can't even imagine how hot they are on stage, and like I don't know, they just they just go for it, you know, and I really appreciate that.

You know, our project Waste is almost exclusively based on us trying to do our own version of UHF by Weird Al. And so I wanted to ask a little bit about the fact that Weird Al's on the record. How did that come to be?
SPEAKER_01
That was really fun because um we we did the song in Spanish and we really wanted an accordion player. We thought who is the most obscene person we could get, and so we were like Weird Al and we asked him, and he said yes right away, which is crazy to think about.

I know we like did not expect him to answer.
SPEAKER_01
Like, he played it once and it wasn't right, and he like kept playing it until he finally got it, and it was so cool. And he brought like the right accordion for the type of music, like he was he went above and beyond. He was amazing.

Then for the music video, um, we asked him if he would be a part of that too, and he said yes again, which was crazy. Um, and he brought like four different like outfit options, which were all so good.

Yeah, he brought like four different Hawaiian shirts, and he was like, also, I have an abnormally large head, so I'm bringing my own hat. And we're like, oh, okay.

And we were like, we have one. And he was like, No, my head's gonna be too big for that.

Oh, that's amazing. I'm so psyched that he was so receptive to doing that with you all. That's awesome.
